Ankle sprains are serious?
What is a sprained ankle?
A sprained ankle occurs following a sudden sideways or twisting foot movement. An ankle sprain can occur during sporting events or during daily activities. All it takes is an awkward step or an uneven surface because of a sprained ankle – that's why the sprained ankle are among the most common foot and ankle. The injuries are not always minor ankle sprains Although are common. Some people with repeated or severe sprains can develop long-term joint pain and weakness. Treating a sprained ankle can help prevent problems ongoing ankle. How does an ankle sprain? An ankle sprain usually occurs when a person lands from jumping or running on an uneven surface. For example, ankle sprains are often seen when basketball players jump down and land on another player's foot. Ankle sprains also occur with activities higher daily routine, like going down a curb or slipping on ice. What happens inside when it is an ankle sprain? An ankle sprain is an injury ankle ligaments. Ligaments are bands of tissuelike rubber bandsthat attach bone to another and bind the joints together. In the ankle joint, ligaments provide stability by limiting side to side movement. The severity of an ankle sprain depends on whether the ligament is stretched, partially torn or completely torn, and on the number of ligaments involved. Ankle sprains are not the same strains that affect muscles rather than ligaments. There are two broad categories Ankle sprain: Investment Ankle Sprains: This is the most common type of ankle sprain occurs when the foot is inverted, falling inward. When this type of ankle sprain occurs, the outside or lateral ligaments are stretched too far. There are three ligaments that attach to the outer ankle. About 90% of the Ankle sprains are inversion injuries. The pain is always on the outside of the ankle, and usually no pain within the ankle joint.
Eversion Ankle Sprains: The other type of ankle injury is called an eversion injury, where the foot is twisted outwards. When this occurs, the ligament called the deltoid ligament, is stretched too far. Patients will have pain on the inner ankle.
What are the symptoms of an ankle sprain? The most common symptoms associated with an ankle sprain are pain in the immediate site of rupture with swelling and bruising. The ankle area usually tender to touch, and it hurts to move. In more severe sprains, you can listen and / or feel something tear, along with breaking. You may have extreme pain in the first and will not be able to walk or even put weight on the foot. The degree of symptoms tends to correlate well with the amount of damage to these ligaments. Ankle sprain grade I: Grade ankle sprains cause stretching of the ligaments. Symptoms tend to be limited to pain and swelling. Most patients can walk without crutches, but may not be able to run or jump. Ankle sprain grade II: A grade II sprain of the ankle is more severe partial tearing of the ligaments. There is often more important swelling and bruising caused by bleeding under the skin. Patients usually have pain when walking, but it may take a few steps. Degree III Ankle Sprain: Grade III ankle sprains are complete tears of the ligaments. The ankle is usually quite painful, and walking can be difficult. Patients complain of instability, or a feeling of giving way in the ankle joint. As mentioned earlier, pain and swelling are the most common symptoms of a ankle sprain. Patients often notice bruising in the area of injury. This bruising will go down the foot towards the toes in the days after ankle sprain – The reason for this is gravity pulling the blood down to the foot.
Why is it needed immediate medical attention? There are four key reasons by an ankle sprain should be promptly evaluated and treated by a specialist in foot and ankle:
1. An ankle sprain is not treated can lead to chronic instability the ankle, a condition characterized by persistent discomfort and a "giving in" ankle. You can also develop leg weakness.
2. You may have suffered a more severe ankle injury along with the sprain. This could include a serious bone fracture that could lead to troubling complications if not question.
3. An ankle sprain may be accompanied by a foot injury that causes discomfort but has gone unnoticed so far.
4. Rehabilitation of a sprained ankle needs to begin immediately. If rehabilitation is delayed, the injury may be less likely to heal properly. In my next article I will talk more about how to diagnose and treat ankle sprains.
